The EdUKEation Foundation supports music education for young New Zealanders. This is achieved by encouraging the purchase of ukuleles, tutorial software and multimedia music computers to Primary and Intermediate schools through community sponsorship .
Ten of the many good reasons to support this Ukuleles in Schools Project. 1. The trustees, sponsors and the community share a desire to to see young people spend time on positive and constructive recreation. 2. There is substantial musical talent in the young people of today. Much of it is never developed. 3. Fewer school teachers today put emphasis on instrumental music. The once common recorder lessons are rare. Children do not want to share instruments that have been in someone else's mouth. 4. Ukuleles are affordable, hygienic, and players can sing at the same time. 5. Ukuleles are being rediscovered around the world. In Canada most schools teach ukulele. Communities are forming ukulele orchestras. 6. At a young age ukulele players develop dexterity and an ear for chords and melodies. These skills translate to guitar as they grow older. 7. Many of the world's great guitarists started on ukulele, including Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, and New Zealand legend Peter Posa. 8. Ukuleles are being featured today by many well known performers, including Neil Finn, Jack Johnson, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Buffet and Ann Murray, as well as stars of the past like George Formby, Buster Keaton, and Tiny Tim. 9. Teenagers who have an active interest in playing musical instruments are less likely to become involved in negative social behaviours. Ukulele music is associated with humour, good friendships, cheerful fun and positive activity. Advertising agencies are already using this. 10. Tertiary training and careers in music are a viable option in New Zealand today.
Funding. Schools are encouraged to seek their own sponsors from their own parent body, community businesses and organisations. Some community service clubs such as Lions and Rotary, are already active in sponsoring ukuleles in schools.
